NEWS
Two recent updates from the Ice Cream & Gelato world.
“Sunscreen” Scoops
Van Leeuwen has dropped “Sunscreen” flavour Ice Cream. It’s a collab with Carnival Cruise line, a ‘protest to the end of summer’. It won’t be released to the general public - only select media outlets - with both companies saying they will wait and measure demand on social media. Made with coconut cream, cocoa butter, vanilla extract, this is another in the production line of Shock and Unique flavours that are the foundation of the Van Leeuwen brand. It follows the recent Malört flavour for a Chicago store opening, collaborating with local Liqueur company Jeppson’s Malört (Malört, a Swedish bäsk style liqueur - a Chicago love-it-or-hate-it delicacy). Van Leeuwen regularly produce big name collabs - see Ed Sheeran scooping in one of their NYC stores for his latest album release.
Jerry leaves Ben
Jerry, of Ben and Jerry’s, resigns from the world famous Ice Cream company after 47 years. In a statement on X posted by Co-Founder Ben (a post viewed 39.7m times) Jerry said he could no longer "in good conscience" remain with the company. Ben & Jerrys began in Vermont in 1978 and not only changed what Ice Cream could be, but trailblazed what a company could be. They were merged into Unilever in 2000, under the premise they had the “Independence to pursue their values”. This included speaking up for “peace, justice and human right in relation to real world events”, not just when it was easy, but when there was potentially something to lose from it. Jerry felt this has been eroded in recent times. Deeper dive here.

Yuzu
What the greats are doing and what next.

Yuzu: A small, bumpy-skinned citrus fruit. Usually harvested Nov-Dec, available fresh seasonally, and as juice or paste year-round. Used in Sauces (ponzu), Spicy pastes (kosho), Teas, Cocktails, and Desserts. Though there are other cool uses - the yuzu bath (yuzu yu), a traditional winter solstice ritual in Japan, involves floating whole yuzu fruits in a hot bath (watch Capybaras enjoy one here).
What the greats are doing
Melbourne’s Piccolina have recently gone with Yuzu, Mandarin & Orange: “Fresh yuzu, mandarin and orange churned into a tangy sorbetto” - keeping it Citrus.
Death in Venice Gelato (Toronto) serve us something soft - Pineapple yuzu swirled with sake kasu & mirin. More on their highly innovative Chemist/Owner here.
What next?
